Movember Diaries – Roland Leung

Posted on December 9, 2024

Movember – a month dedicated to raising awareness for men’s health in November. At Flex Studio, this initiative encourages men to engage in physical activities that promote well-being.

This year, we spotlight Roland Leung, a Hong Kong TV and radio host and producer, who took on the 30-Day Pilates Challenge, sharing his transformative journey and insights into men’s health.

Roland’s Journey into Pilates

Exercising is a habit that requires adjustment and consistency. Before I began practicing Pilates, I perceived it merely as a static form of movement. However, after learning about the specific movements of each exercise, I realized that Pilates focuses our core. It also works on strengthening the abdominal, back, hip, and other core muscle groups. The slow, controlled movements in Pilates benefit every part of the body by enhancing flexibility.

Impact of Pilates on Posture

My work primarily involves teaching, often requiring me to sit or stand for extended periods during classes. This sedentary lifestyle has contributed to poor posture, particularly in my lower back and hips. Pilates utilizes various apparatus to train some muscles I never knew existed! Helping to correct my posture both while sitting and standing.

Physical and Psychological Changes

Throughout the challenge, I noticed significant physical and psychological changes, particularly in my perseverance and focus. Initially, I found some exercises challenging and felt overwhelmed by the complexity of achieving excellence. As someone who has engaged in various forms of exercise, I learned to concentrate on my breathing and control my muscle movements with precision under the guidance of my instructor. This practice led to smoother execution of each movement, resulting in improved physical condition, reduced daily stress, and a greater sense of relaxation for both body and mind.

After completing the Movember challenge, Roland reported increased awareness of his posture and improved mobility. He expressed enthusiasm for continuing Pilates as part of his fitness regimen, emphasizing that maintaining an active lifestyle into middle age and beyond, we can preserve agility and responsiveness akin to our younger selves. It’s essential to persist in our fitness journeys rather than surrendering to complacency.

Movember serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of men’s health and the often-overlooked benefits of exercises like Pilates. By participating in challenges like these, men can foster better health practices and combat stereotypes surrounding fitness. As Roland exemplifies, men can improve strength, posture and body form and alleviate health issues due to adverse postures by embracing new forms of exercise that can lead to profound personal growth and well-being.
