Pilates Saved My Back – and changed my career

Iris Wong’s first love was the piano. Her second is Pilates.

Both are a huge part of the Flex instructor’s life. When not teaching clients at Flex Hong Kong, she is teaching piano.

But despite loving her music, Iris needed to also deal with her physicality. Long-term back pain had really taken its toll, and it was time for her to transform and rehabilitate.

“I had fibrosis in my back, and have suffered from chronic pain since I was 28. I also had a slipped disc at T4-T5 on my lower back. And my thoracic spine was tight, due to Scoliosis and fibrosis.”

Iris decided to take action, and was introduced to Flex. She turned to the studio’s unique Classical Pilates sessions, and with consistent practice, has dramaticaly improved her physical and mental health.

“I started Pilates in 2020, and had privates twice a week, and at least one to two group class per week as well. During the covid lockdown, I stuck with using Zoom classes,” she says.

“After practising Pilates for six months, my chronic pain was completely gone. And the movement of my thoracic spine has improved a lot, a change even my Osteo therapist has noticed.” 

Iris is such a convert that she completed her 3rd Generation Classical Pilates certification with Alycea Ungaro’s REAL Pilates, and teaches in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Furthermore, Iris noticed significant aesthetic benefits from her practice.

“My hunchback has totally gone. I measured 0.4cm taller when I had my body check last year.”

What drew her to take her practice to the teaching level was the specific and methodical practice of Classical Pilates. Much like learning and mastering the piano, Iris loves the systematic training method of Classical Pilates, but also building a resilience of both body and mind.

“The most magical thing about Pilates is that it’s a mind and body exercise. I’m capable of understanding, controlling and communicating with my own body,” says Iris.

“I can move intelligently and avoid injury. I am more balanced and have a much stronger body than ever before.”
